3724. Chef Smurf

Chef Smurf is the Smurf village's chef. He knows dozens of recipes and cooks many dishes. He always wears his toque blanche (white chef's hat). In the cartoon series, Chef Smurf and Greedy Smurf are combined into the same character. In Volume 11, a Smurf is called Schtroumpf Gourmand, who looks just like Schtroumpf cuisinier (wearing a toque blanche, neckerchief and apron). In Volume 23 Schtroumpf Gourmand is shown wearing the normal Smurf outfit (like he has in all other volumes) and Schtroumpf Cuisinier again wearing the chef outfit, so Volume 12 may have just been a mistake.

3703. Smurfette

Smurfette (French: La Schtroumpfette) is a female character from the Smurfs. She was created by Gargamel, the Smurfs' enemy in order to distract and trap them; however, later she was rescued by Papa Smurf and turned into a real smurf. She was the only female Smurf until the creation of Sassette. A Granny Smurf was also later introduced, although it is unclear how she was created. Thierry Culliford, the son of Peyo and current head of the Studio Peyo, announced in 2008 that more female Smurfs would be introduced in the stories. Smurfette has more delicate features than the other Smurfs, with long blonde wavy hair, longer eyelashes, and wears a white dress and white high heels. She is the love interest of almost every Smurf. Those voicing her include Céline Monsarrat and Lucille Bliss. Smurfette is voiced by pop superstar Katy Perry in the 2011 film version, and voiced by Melissa Sturm in The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol. The Hanna-Barbera cartoon series of the Smurfs, introduced in 1981, had her as an actual Gargamel spy and saboteur who intentionally tries to disrupt life in the village. She was magically created from blue clay, sugar and spice but nothing nice, crocodile tears, half a pack of lies, a chatter of a magpie, and the hardest stone for her heart. She is found in the forest by Hefty Smurf (The Smurfs, season 1 volume 1, "The Smurfette"). Working for Gargamel, Smurfette tried a few different approaches to defeat the Smurfs, all of which failed. In the dam incident, she used a slice of cake to lure Greedy Smurf into opening it. When Greedy tried to close the dam again, Smurfette yanked it back. Greedy soon caught on, all the tugging eventually threw Smurfette off balance and she promptly fell into the river. While Greedy hammered the dam back down, Smurfette was rescued by Papa Smurf who sent her to court. In Smurf court, Smurfette's beauty was to no avail with the entire village angrily aware of her treachery. She finally admitted her slavery to Gargamel, and tearfully offered to submit the Smurfs' judgement. However, Papa Smurf absolves her of her guilt and offers to attempt to free her by making her a real Smurf. Papa Smurf magically undid some of Gargamel's spells, consequently turning Smurfette into a more beautiful creature. Her hair grew and became blonde. Her dress became frillier. As a final touch, her shoes turned into high-heel pumps. Of course, everyone now loved her and actually fought to do trivial favors for her such as walking her home. When Gargamel recontacts her, he is alarmed by her changed visage and realizes that Papa Smurf has undone his control of her. Instead he tries to placate his and manipulates her to lure the Smurfs into a trap. The trap is successful with the entire community captured and Smurfette is aghast at her unwitting role in it. However, she is then able to spectacularly undo her mistake by disguising herself as a male masked Smurf to lure away Gargamel and Azreal on a chase that both allows her to incapacitate the villains and free the Smurfs. At the conclusion of the story, any doubts of the Smurfs of Smurfette's loyalty are resolved and she is made a welcome permanent member of their village. Smurfette's original artificial nature arose again in the sequel episode, "Smurfette Unmade." In this story, Gargamel tells his apprentice Scruple (who was an added character by this time) about how he regrets creating her, he comments how bad is that Gargamel can't turn her evil again, and he remembers there is a way. They kidnap her and prepare a spell which initially doesn't seem to work and the Smurfs take her home. When Scruple turns on the next page of Gargamel's spell book, the bad guys realize the spell is complete but its effects won't become apparent until the next full moon's midnight, which happened to be that very night. The effects included Smurfette changing back to her original appearance and malicious personality before she could consult Papa Smurf on the matter. Thus changed into her original form, Smurfette managed to hide by concealing her black hair with a wig (in spite of her feet being a dead giveaway) but the Smurfs eventually learned the truth when she arranges the Smurfs to be captured. Papa Smurf said he couldn't repeat the spell that had initially turned her good. However, when Gargamel was about to get Baby Smurf to test his gold making potion (over Smurfette's objection), Smurfette's conscience rebelled and it changed her back to her blond-haired appearance. Gargamel and Scruple attempt to capture her to prevent them from losing again but Smufette destroys the potions sending the smurfs arch enemies into a tree. They all returned home with Papa Smurf guessing that Smurfette's Smurf nature was too strong to ever fully remove in the first place.

3702. Brainy Smurf

Brainy Smurf considers himself the most intelligent Smurf in the village and an expert on everything, although his actual knowledge is questionable at best; often, his attempts to help in a given situation leads to more problems. He is Papa Smurf's apprentice and assistant, and he often thinks that makes him the de facto second-in-command. He can be distinguished from the others by the large glasses he wears. He also has archived his self-perceived wit and wisdom in volumes of books entitled "Quotations from Brainy Smurf." The Smurfs most often respond to his self-righteous preaching by tossing him out of the village. His best friend is Clumsy. Most of the time, the other Smurfs never listen to his plans unless its a incorrect or bad idea.

3223. Greedy Smurf

Greedy Smurf is an exceptionally gluttonous Smurf. He has an exceptional interest in eating cakes and other pastry. Greedy usually cannot seem to help himself, and he is often chased by Baker Smurf for stealing snacks and food. In the cartoon series, his character was combined with that of Chef Smurf, where he enjoys baking and cooking, but eventually ends up eating his own creations, hence the name. He wears a chef's toque and apron in the comics—but a handkerchief, instead of an apron, in the cartoon.

3180. Handy Smurf

Handy Smurf (original French name Schtroumpf Bricoleur) is one of the main characters of the Smurfs comic books and the Smurfs cartoon show, who has appeared on the show throughout its entire run. His role is that of the village mechanic, usually very resourceful and very creative in designing various types of inventions, some of which have proved useful in protecting or rescuing his fellow Smurfs. He is easily identifiable by his workman's overalls and a visored Smurf hat, and carries a pencil around on his ear. In the comics and the movie, Handy's workman overalls are navy blue in color. Unlike the TV series and the movie, his hat lacks the visor in the comics. Handy has a Wisconsin Accent. Handy, as Jokey once remarked, is a very fanatical and driven person. He is often inventing something and is so enthusiastic about it that he fails to see how the others think of it. This has put him in a lot of trouble a couple of times. In the comics, when Handy invented a handheld powered drill, he began testing it on almost everything in the village, and in the process he ruined the bucket of the central well, ruined the halters of Hefty (although Hefty then saw that the iron globes with the added holes could be used as bowling balls, so he didn't mind it that much), sunk Marco Smurf's boat when he drilled through the hull, and finally ruined the cake mold that Smurfette was planning to use to make the cake for Papa Smurf's birthday. After the dough was poured in and went right through the mold, the Smurfs were looking very angrily at Jokey, who defended himself with "It wasn't me, you guys, honest!" Handy walked in and asked if Smurfette liked the collander he made from that old cake mold and showcasing proudly how he did it using the handheld power drill he made. Realizing that Handy was the one behind all the mayhem had been going on in the village, the others chased after him, and at the party they had attached two wooden beams with shoes attached to the drill bit, turning it into a Handy Smurf butt-kicking machine. Handy is the one who builds all the houses and tools for the Smurfs. He plays a great part in the village, being one of the most needed Smurfs. Without him, the Smurfs wouldn't know how to fix things the right way. Handy is always seen building a new thing in almost every episode.

3173. Painter Smurf

Painter (original French name Schtroumpf Peintre) is one of the main characters of the Smurfs cartoon show, who has appeared on the show throughout its entire run. He is the village artist who usually does portraits in paint, though he occasionally works in sculpture -- a skill that in the comic books is mostly handled by Sculptor Smurf. He speaks with a French accent, and is usually identified by a berry-red painter's jacket and a dark blue artist's tie that he wears around his neck. He is very temperamental and protective of his masteurpiesas (phonetically "master pizzas") whether it's from commentary by his fellow Smurfs or from those who wish to ruin his work. Painter has a friendship with the color sprite, Spectra. He is one of the Smurfs who was trapped in time with the time crystals. Painter once called Clumsy Smurf a fool, but his accent made it sound like 'fuel, with the 'E' as in egg. He is also known to have called a fried egg a 'fred' egg, resulting in some confusion on the part of Poet Smurf , who happened to have been arguing with him at the time. In the 2011 Smurfs movie, Painter is first seen in the early part of the film working on an ice sculpture which Clumsy slices in half with the ladder that he carries on the runaway wheelbarrow that he rides, with the ice chippings falling upon Chef Smurf's pizzas. In the end credits, he is shown displaying his latest work, "The Battle Of Belvedere", which is the Smurfs' battle with Gargamel at Belvedere Castle.
