3717. Childrens Hospital of the Kings Daughter

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) is a not-for-profit hospital located in Norfolk, Virginia, in a medical complex that includes Eastern Virginia Medical School and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. It is Virginia’s only freestanding, full-service pediatric hospital – treating children from birth through age 21 – and the site of the state’s only dedicated pediatric emergency center. The hospital and its community-based Health Centers primarily serve southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina but treat children from across the United States and around the world. Whether a child needs hospitalization, ongoing care for a chronic illness, outpatient surgery or primary care, CHKD Health System provides the staff, facilities and technologies that address the unique demands of childhood. Since the Norfolk City Union of The King’s Daughters established the hospital in 1961, CHKD has undergone two major renovations and expansions and is now at the hub of a comprehensive system of caring dedicated exclusively to children. “In leading the region in the provision of children’s healthcare services, CHKD will: Deliver excellence in quality and service as we continually measure and improve our outcomes; Evolve and enhance services in response to the needs of children and the advancement of science; Educate the next generation of leaders in children’s health; Be the healthcare employer of choice; and, Collaborate with others to attain our vision.” Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters provides care to all children, regardless of the family’s ability to pay, and assures responsibility for the difference between the cost of providing care to Medicaid patients and reimbursements from the Medicaid program. In 2010, CHKD’s total community benefit was $50.19 million. This number includes subsidized health services ($21.05 million), community health improvement ($13.05 million), charity care and unreimbursed Medicaid ($10.29 million), and education of health professionals and research ($5.8 million). Medicaid does not fully cover CHKD’s cost of providing care as the Medicaid program faces significant and ongoing challenges with soaring enrollments and declining availability of funds. Provider payment rates have been frozen or reduced while costs continue to climb. In 2010, CHKD reported a Medicaid shortfall – the difference between the cost of providing care and payments for that care – of more than $9 million. Because of this multi-million dollar loss, CHKD is continually fundraising and has found many generous and loyal supporters not only within the Hampton Roads community, but nationwide.
